Driving Record Eligibility

Rental may be subject to a verification of your driving record. All renters/drivers are subject to having their driving records and licenses checked.

If a renter/driver does not meet the applicable rental requirements, including the guidelines for driver's licenses and driving records, they may be denied a rental. Avis is not responsible for the failure of any renter/driver to qualify for a rental under these requirements or guidelines.

Rental privileges are denied if a driver's license is suspended or his/her record includes, but is not limited to, one of the following:

One or more convictions for reckless driving within the past 36 months.
DWI/DWAI/DUI within the past 36 months.
Three or more moving violations within the past 24 months.
No valid License.
Two or more accidents within the past 24 months.
Fail to report/leave scene of accident within past 36 months.
Operate without a license within past 36 months.
Possession of stolen vehicle or use in crime within past 36 months.

Avis may verify your driving record with the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you have additional questions on verification of driving records, please contact the rental station directly.

Driver's License Requirements

Below are Avis's driver's license requirement policies:

In order to rent an Avis vehicle, a valid driver's license from the customer's country of residence is required and must be presented at time of rental.

The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period.

International renters must present a valid license from their country of residence. If the driver's license is in a language other than English, an International Driver's Permit is required in conjunction with the country of residence driver's license.

Customers will not be allowed to rent a vehicle with only an International Driver's Permit.
Exception - Japanese travelers may use the Japanese Driver's License Translation Service, which replaces the need for an International Driver's Permit.

No Learner Permits or photocopies are accepted. Temporary driver's licenses are accepted only if for change of residence or replacement of lost or stolen license. If no photo ID, the description on the license must match that of the renter.

Within the European Union, all drivers must produce a current driver's license from the county of residence that has been valid for the last 12 months. An international driver's permit is only accepted together with a valid driver's license from the country of residence.

Additional Drivers:

All additional drivers must meet ALL rental qualifications in regard to age and driving record as well as all other standard rental qualifications.

Must appear at the rental counter with the primary renter.

Must present a valid driver's license.

Must sign the rental agreement.
